Anal fistulas

Anal fistula is a tract connecting the epithelium of the anal canal to the skin of the peri-anal area. It usually develops following a peri-anal abscess in which the abscess bursts into the overlying skin or in which the abscess is incompletely treated.

Diagnosis of anal fistula is usually easy and depends on a history of recurring peri-anal abscess and visualization of the internal and external opening of the fistula.

Visualization of the external opening is the most difficult part of the diagnosis and special tools may be required as fistula probe or anoscope.

Surgery is usually required to cure anal fistula.
