Anatomical types of hemroids

As shown in the illustration, hemroids may be one of two types; internal hemroids are located inside the anus and are not visible or palpable unless prolapsed through the anus where they appear outside the anus. These are called prolapsed internal hemroids. Internal hemroids usually present by a painless rectal bleeding; pain is usually absent or minimal but in prolapsed internal hemroids, pain may be severe.
External hemroids are located outside the anus and they can be seen and palpated as a painful and tender mass outside the anus. In contrast to internal hemroids, external hemroids present mainly by pain with minimal bleeding.
