Development of internal and external hemroids

A diagram illustrating what hemroids exactly are and how they develop. Note the normal submucosal and subcutaneous veins to the left and note that hemroids (to the right) are enlargement of these normal veins.

As you see, if they develop internal to the anus, they lead to what is called internal hemroids and if they develop external to the anus, they form external hemroids which appear as a hard mass around the anus (also visible in the diagram).

So, hemroids are swelling of the normally present veins in the anorectal area which may undergo inflammation and cause various symptoms of hemroids.
